Dave and Shelley On NW Afternoon Excerpts
Part 2

Hosted by Elisa Jaffe and Kent Phillips

Kent: What was the reaction when you first saw each other and realized, "Oh my gosh?"

Shelley: I was shocked because I would have never been interested in him if he'd asked me out on a date.

(laughter)
Also, he was younger than I was, so that was another downfall.

Kent: Dave, what did you think?

Dave: I just couldn't believe it. I looked out there and I knew it was her ... when we first met, it wasn't to be romantic. It was to be friends. It was to take our friendship one step further.

Kent: What changed that? What made it more than that?

Shelley: I said something like, Marriage is something you do until you get it right.

Elisa: Oh, obviously you'd had some bad ones...

Kent: Like, how many bad ones?

Shelley: We'd both been married a couple times before.

Dave: Like, three.

(laughter)

Elisa: Each of you...

Kent: So, when she typed that phrase, that meant a lot to you.

Dave: It meant a lot to me. It was a serious re-frame for me because I figured that I was such a total failure at marriage, that I'd never do it again. And when she said that, it was like, well... if I did get it right, then it would be worth it.

Elisa: So what made you decide to take a chance on it again?

Shelley: We went a way for a weekend, and it was our first romantic weekend.... and from then on... and then we got married several months later. We've been married for almost two years.

(applause)

Kent: Did you tell anyone that you were going to get married?
